Teton Scenic Byway
Teton Scenic Byway is a beautiful drive through Teton Valley, once known by fur traders as "Pierre's Hole." The pretty valley was well populated with beaver and thus a popular trapping ground for both British and American fur traders.
The name "Pierre's Hole" came from an Iroquois Indian fur trapper for the Hudson Bay company called "Old Pierre" Tevanitagon.
At only 10 million years old, the Grand Tetons are the youngest mountain range in the Rocky Mountains. This was once a single mountain of granite whose steep canyons were carved out by glaciers into the valleys between the peaks that are seen today. This mountain range has been known by several names over the years. The early explorers called it "Pilot Peaks" and early French fur trappers called them "Les Trois Teton" meaning "The Three Breasts."
