Fort Kearney State Historic Site

Picture
Fort Kearney was the first fort built specifically to help protect travelers on the Oregon Trail.  Although most of the buildings are no longer present, the grounds are beautiful and well marked with historical information.  There is also a small museum in the visitor center.

Behind the visitor center is a blacksmith's shop.  It is a "sod and frame" construction, meaning that it has wooden walls and a sod roof!
